Our kids showed our Hereford cattle (off and on!) from 1996 to 2004, but they are grown-up, living away and makingtheir own lives now. As a result, we don't get the opportunities to make the shows like we used to. We still manage to get in a couple of shows a year, but the real challenge of our cattle begins when she or he is "put to" performing within our herd, because it's not the outside of the orange which tells us the quality of the fruit! Not comparing Herefords to oranges of course!
We may not be real competative in the show ring, but we have fun doing it as a family. The thing to remember here is that the true test of a breed animal comes after the "illustrious" show carreer!
We feed our show cattle with a simple fitting ration purchased at the local feed store. We will periodically add some extra mineral besides the standard trace mineral block. We also sometimes use a generic fat supplement, flaked corn, or beet pulp. That and hay keep our cattle fit, not "fat"! We do not use hormones, growth stimulants, or special vitamins in the the fitting of our cattle. We feel our cattle should not mis-represent their normal growth potential when we are backgrounding them.
We have Jr. incentive programs for kids who are in 4H or FFA. You can earn money and we can buy your calf back at the end of it's show career. The best part is that you get to keep the first calf out of any show heifer we buy back! Click on the picture below that is labeledJr Incentives for more information.
Check the Sale Barn for upcoming show calves for sale, and if you have any questions in regards to them or our incentives just email us or give us a call!
